Most integrators make you book a call to find out whether you can afford them. Here are the numbers. Each offer is sized so one engineering manager can sign for it without opening a procurement cycle.

Test automation assessment$3,500 to $5,000

I audit your current test process and hand back an architecture, a bill of materials, and a firm quote for building it.

Cycle time, payback period, and a simulated cell layout, so the robot decision gets made on numbers instead of a vendor demo.

How the numbers are built

Where a fixed price comes from

A fixed price is a rate, an estimate, and a contingency factor. Publishing all three is the only way you can tell whether the number is serious.

Rates

Direct work
$125 to $200 per hour equivalent

LabVIEW and TestStand work is priced 15 to 25 percent above standard rate

Fixed bids are estimated hours times rate times a contingency factor of 1.3 to 1.5. I track what each job actually took against what I bid it at, which is the only thing that makes the next estimate better than the last one.

Payment

Up to $10,000

  1. 50 percent on signing
  2. 50 percent on acceptance

Net 30. Acceptance is a written checklist agreed in the statement of work, walked through on a call.

$10,000 to $50,000

  1. 40 percent on purchase order
  2. 40 percent at acceptance
  3. 20 percent at commissioning

You buy the hardware on your own purchase orders from my bill of materials. No markup, no floated cash.

System and cell builds

  1. 25 percent on purchase order
  2. 25 percent at design review
  3. 40 percent at factory acceptance
  4. 10 percent at commissioning

Factory acceptance is a written procedure with a signed acceptance sheet, plus safety validation on any cell with a moving arm.

What I will turn down, and why

Saying this upfront saves us both a call. None of it is a judgement on the work, it is a judgement on whether I can do it well from here.

It has to ship this week

Deadlines in weeks are workable. Deadlines in days mean somebody has already been let down and adding me will not fix it.

It needs someone in your daily standup

Written status weekly, calls at lunch or after five. If the work needs a person in the room every morning, it needs an employee.

Scope is vague but the price has to be fixed

That combination only ends one way. Start with a paid assessment and the fixed price becomes possible.

It goes through full corporate procurement

A twelve-week purchase order cycle for an eight-week project does not work for either of us yet. Under about ten thousand dollars usually sits inside one manager’s signing authority.
